How the Rich Monitor their Health, and You Can Too! with David Karow
Humans have come a long way over the last 200,000 years. But, with all the genetic and environmental factors impacting our health, including the coronavirus that’s engulfed the planet, it can feel like no matter how well we eat and how regularly we exercise, we still have relatively little control over our life expectancy. My guest today, the incredibly smart Dr. David Karow, is trying to change all that. Dr. Karow is President and Chief Innovation Officer at Human Longevity Inc. and an expert in advanced genomic analytics and magnetic resonance imaging or MRI.
He and his team at HLI obtain from their client various imaging, genetic, and clinical biomarkers and then analyze this data with the help of machine learning, all in the hopes of identifying disease in the earliest possible stages when it is most treatable.
You’re about to learn some fascinating stuff about the human genome, about risk assessment, about biomarkers, and about medical imaging. It’s surprising more people haven’t had their genomes sequenced. You might think you’ve had your genome sequenced because you signed up for 23andme and spit into a vial, but that’s a far cry from getting your entire genome sequenced. You’ll understand why in a little bit, when Dr Karow explains the difference between whole genome sequencing and SNPs or single nucleotide polymorphisms. If you wish you could have a clearly-drawn map to navigate your own health, or even a crystal ball, you’re in for a treat! Let’s dive right in with Dr. David Karow.
How to Prepare for Coronavirus with Steve Good
The new salutation seems to be ‘hope you’re staying safe during these crazy times.’ It’s trite and it’s meaningless. Do not just throw around platitudes like this when so many of us are scared and lost. Instead, be a beacon of light for people. In other words, help them be smart, safe, and proactive.
When connecting with someone, ask them if they have a thermometer and a pulse oximeter on hand. Make sure they know how to use it, that they’re checking to see if their blood oxygen level doesn’t dip below 90%. Ask them if they have two month’s supply of food and water, as well as at least 30 masks and pairs of gloves.
You need to educate yourself on what you need on hand and what you need to do if things go very wrong. That’s why I’ve asked my friend Steve Good to be on the show today. Steve is one of the most in the know and prepared people in my network as far as the Coronavirus pandemic is concerned.
The Narcissists Are Among You with Dr. Ramani Durvasula
I’ve titled this episode, “The Narcissists are Among You” for a reason. If it sounds scary, like the zombies or the vampires are coming—well, it’s kind of scary. The kind of vampires we’re talking about are emotional vampires.
It seems the term narcissism is so much in the lexicon these days, not because narcissism is something new, but because of the increased awareness and knowledge sharing. And it’s sad to say, but narcissism is rampant throughout our society.
My guest today is one of the world-leading experts on narcissism, Dr. Ramani Durvasula. Ramani is a psychologist, professor, author and speaker. Her most recent book, “Don’t You Know Who I Am?”:
How to Stay Sane in an Era of Narcissism, Entitlement, and Incivility, provides a deep insight on how narcissism is impacting all of us, what it is, and what we can do about it. I think you’ll find this episode highly relevant, as chances are there is, or has been, a narcissist in your life – whether a boss, an employee, a teacher, a significant other—who has caused you trauma. It really is a fascinating area, and we got into what Dr. Durvasula calls the multifaceted stone of narcissism.
Once you get a handle on all the facets, you really understand all the big player themes in the world of mental health. We talked about how much of this disorder is genetic, and how much is born of early trauma. It’s really great to know that arming yourself with education on the subject and learning coping techniques can give you control over the situation. Check out this illuminating and empowering episode.
Optimize Your Cash Flow and Profit with Adam Lean
In order to succeed in business, you need to be financially literate. Or at least somebody in the company needs to be. Too often, business owners try not to involve themselves too much in the nuts and bolts of the finances, me included. It’s way more fun to grow the business than to dig into the numbers to confirm the business is actually healthy. In my case, I love servicing my SEO clients, podcasting, writing, speaking, and not pulling up Quickbooks or even logging into my online banking.
My guest today, Adam Lean, is someone who sees both sides and helps business owners who don’t naturally gravitate to managing by the numbers still thrive.
Adam is the founder and president of the CFO Project. Adam and his team help improve the profitability of small businesses. He has a podcast of his own, as well, called P is for Profit.
This is going to be such a valuable episode to you if you have a business, or even just a side hustle. It’s important, as you’ll soon discover, to know the important numbers— there are 7 core ones. You track these numbers and compare them to last year’s, last month’s to your target. That way you will understand what is and is not working in your business. We talk about managing sales, leads, timely payment of your invoices, the four things that influence revenue, and delegation. This is an episode that warrants you taking notes, so if you’re driving or jogging, just know you’ll probably be going back over this episode. And now, on with the show!
Self-Mastery, Unlocked with Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
Personal transformation can come when you’re open–willing to go on a lifelong journey of learning, experimentation, and spiritual exploration. My guest today is a fascinating learner and teacher, Don Miguel Ruiz Jr., who grew up in Mexico steeped in the traditions and learnings of his grandmother, his mother, and his father, Don Miguel Ruiz Sr., who wrote The Four Agreements.
In today’s episode, Don Miguel Jr. and I discuss enlightenment, self-acceptance, and the dark and light sides of the human experience. One of the lessons Don Miguel Jr. learned from his grandmother is that we all go through our dark times.
We have a choice–we can either let those dark times sink us, or we can learn from them, and use that experience to teach others.
Don Miguel Jr. has taken the lessons of his family and discovered his own personal freedom. He’s the author of multiple books, including The Five Levels of Attachment, Living a Life of Awareness, and The Mastery of Self. He also co-authored the book, The Seven Secrets to Healthy, Happier Relationships with HeatherAsh Amara.
As a Nagual, Don Miguel Jr. now helps others discover optimal physical and spiritual health so that they may achieve their own personal freedom. If you’re as fascinated and impressed with this family as I am, you’re going to be pretty blown away by today’s episode.
Hack Your Emotions Using Wearable Tech with Scott Donnell
The inspiration for me starting this podcast was really my fascination with biohacking and personal optimization – merging the world of science with the spiritual and cognitive experience. When you hear about the tech that today’s guest Scott Donnell is going to speak with us about, you’re going to feel like you’ve stepped into a Star Trek episode.
I met Scott during a dinner at the Genius Network annual event back in November, and I was so impressed with some of the projects he was working on. I knew I wanted to have him come speak on my show. Scott is a prolific entrepreneur. He founded Apex Leadership, then a marketplace for
kidpreneurs called MyFirstSale.
Now he is CEO of Hapbee, which is an amazing wearable device. The technology of which comes from over 15 years of research studying molecular actions using some of the most sensitive SQUID, which stands for superconducting quantum interference device, magnetometers in the world.
Actually, I was reminded of a discussion I had on episode 232 with Ariel Garten, who also developed a really interesting wearable device specifically for meditation, called Muse. In this episode, Scott shares the science behind the frequencies that trigger emotional states, the implications of this device for psychology and neuroscience, and where things are headed in terms of wearable tech. So if you geek out about the future, and especially if you love gadgets as much as I do, the future is here. Tune in and check it out.
Optimize Your Memory with Ron White
I’m sure everyone has probably had the frustrating experience of not being able to remember important things–whether they’re facts, names, or just information that feels like it’s at the tip of your tongue, but somehow it’s inaccessible. My guest today, Ron White, is a two-time national memory champion. He held the record for the fastest to memorize a deck of shuffled cards in only 1 minute and 27 seconds. As a memory expert, Ron has given talks all over the world from Zimbabwe to Milan. He has appeared on Good Morning America , CBS Evening News, CBS Early Show, FOX, NBC, and newspapers across the country from the New York Post to the Dallas Morning News.
I heard Ron speak recently at a mastermind and I found him so compelling, not just on stage, but in conversation afterwards, that I had to have him on the show! In this episode, he talks with me about how memory works, how to lay the groundwork for actually improving your memory, and devices we can employ to access more of our memory which I found really fascinating and terribly useful, and I think you will too. And now, on with the show!
Optimize Your Listening and Speaking with Julian Treasure
We live in a world where technology, obsession with devices causes us to have shorter and shorter attention spans. And though in school, we teach our kids how to read and write, we don’t teach them how to speak and to listen. These are such critical skills to learn because whether it’s in your personal life or your professional world, the ability to communicate is at the heart of any relationship. My guest today is author and speaker Julian Treasure. Julian is a communication visionary who has given multiple TED Talks on this very subject. His books, How to be Heard: Secrets for
Powerful Speaking and Listening, and Sound Business, delve into how to speak so that people listen, and how to listen so that people feel heard.
Julian is regularly featured in publications like Time Magazine, The Times, The Economist, and BBC. Julian is also the founder of The Sound Agency, which works with some of the world’s biggest brands to improve their sound. He travels the world training people to listen better and create healthier sounds. So if any of this resonates with you, hone your listening skills right now because I’m jazzed to say Julian is joining us today for episode number 234. Enjoy.
On the Path of Self-Discovery with Jeff Goins
I’m committed to revealing light in the world in everything I do, including this podcast. I believe revealing light is in large part the reason why I’m here on this earth. But as my guest today, Jeff Goins so aptly puts it, every light casts a shadow. Jeff and I discussed how often we end up chasing the shadows rather than chasing the light. It’s easy to focus on your social media persona or keeping up with the neighbors, especially when that new Tesla shows up in their driveway. But are you ignoring the realities of your deeper life or what it truly takes to get that Tesla?
Jeff is the bestselling author of five books including The Art of Work and Real Artists Don’t Starve. He founded the Tribe Warriors writing community and has an award-winning blog. Jeff opens up about how his personal struggles gave him lessons and leadership. We discussed the shadow monsters of impostor syndrome, shame and trauma. Jeff says you can do really great things while still feeling incomplete. And while every writer can struggle when confronted by that blank page, Jeff’s story is both insightful and inspirational. And now on with the show.
Optimize your Meditation with Ariel Garten
I’ve always considered myself a pragmatic thinker. Breaking down how things work is fun and it makes sense. But on my journey of personal growth, I’ve had experiences that have challenged my mind to see a greater, more empowering view of life. I traveled to India and had a spiritual awakening. I met my soulmate. I’ve created a life I truly enjoy. Part of my love for biohacking and personal optimization, is it merges the scientific with the spiritual.
My guest, Ariel Garten, has done just that. She’s a neuroscientist, psychotherapist, and is the co-founder of Muse, the brain sensing headband that helps you meditate.
This episode we discuss her development of Muse and how the device helps you more effectively meditate by keeping you in a state of “focused attention.” We discuss the neurological, psychological, and spiritual benefits of meditation.
Like past guests Dr. Andrew Hill and Chris Keane, Ariel brings new insights and a few scientific shortcuts to get the most from meditation. So if you are still fairly new to meditative practices or on the path to Divine Oneness, this episode offers a fascinating insight into the deeper neurological processes at work when we meditate. So let’s get on with the show.
